The Dolomites

TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE, VENETO

The Dolomites are a mountain range in north-eastern Italy of limestone, dolomite and flysch, formed over 250 million years ago. In 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their 'outstanding natural beauty' and cultural significance.

This mountain range is famous throughout the world for its dense forests, crystal clear lakes and scenic peaks. You can find several peaks with heights exceeding 3000 metres and incredibly diverse ecosystems that will take your breath away, the most famous peak being the Marmolada.

The Dolomites offer many opportunities for summer and winter excursions, including trekking (mainly for mountain lovers) and skiing (mainly for snow lovers).

They have long been a popular tourist spot in Italy where you can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site - Val di Fiemme - Catena del Lagorai - which comprises six different valleys with their characteristic landscapes.

The Dolomites are home to some of the most important works of art in the world, including the famous Basilica di S. Maria di Piazza, a masterpiece by Michelangelo.
