The Brera Art Gallery in Milan

LOMBARDY

Perhaps not everyone knows that it is thanks to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria that Milan can today boast one of the most beautiful picture galleries in the world: Brera. She wanted the quarter to become home to some of the city's most advanced cultural institutions: in addition to the Academy of Fine Arts and the Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere, the Braidense National Library, the Astronomical Observatory and the Botanical Garden.

The Brera Art Gallery's collection of works of art contains some of the greatest masterpieces in the history of world art, including the famous painting 'Dead Christ in the Sepulchre and Three Mourners" by Andrea Mantegna, "Supper at Emmaus" by Caravaggio, "Marriage of the Virgin" by Raphael, "The Kiss" by Francesco Hayezas well as other works by important artists such as Bramante, Giovanni Bellini, Gentile da Fabriano, Tintoretto, Canaletto, Lorenzo Lotto, Piero della Francesca, Mattia Preti, Umberto Boccioni and Georges Braque.
